Backtracking

So many teachers use a method presented here to triple your reading speed, and present it as magical or mythical, when in reality it's the easiest change you can make to initially increase your reading speed. This is because it focuses the eye. But I'm getting off topic slightly, I'll explain that a bit more further along in the chapter.

Backtracking is a huge time waster for most people. It's the process of reading something, feeling like you haven't taken any of it in, and then going back over it to reread it. The thing is, if you've read the passage, you've understood it and the information will be stored away in your subconscious mind at least.

The reason people backtrack and feel like they haven't undestood something, is because they're reading passively. This isn't their fault. Without speed reading, you're not reading fast enough for your mind to stay interested in the material, and so it drifts off in to a day dream. This is why so many people find reading boring, because they're not reading fast enough to stimulate themselves.

First off, by using the techniques in this book, your reading speed will increase significantly, so the issue with getting bored and day dreaming will subside by a hefty amount. This in itself will reduce the amount that you're backtracking. But you'll also want to make a conscious effort to not do it, as it has likely become a habit for you since you've done it for so many years.

Now, the active method for eliminating backtracking, and the technique I mentioned above. You'll need to get a pointer, a pen, or even your finger works great, for this technique. You simply put the point of the pen beneath the first word and then slide it along the page at a pace that is slightly uncomfortable for you. This works firstly to eliminate backtracking, but second to increase the speed that your eyes are moving across the page. This technique in itself will at least triple your reading speed, but it isn't magic, it's just forcing your mind to focus on the words.
